Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?, by Jeanette Winterson

Review

"Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? is raucous. It hums with a dark refulgence from its first pages. . . . Singular and electric . . . [Winterson's] life with her adoptive parents was often appalling, but it made her the writer she is."—The New York Times"She's one of the most daring and inventive writers of our time—searingly honest yet effortlessly lithe as she slides between forms, exuberant and unerring, demanding emotional and intellectual expansion of herself and of us. . . She explores not only the structure of storytelling byt the interplay of past, present, and future, blending science fiction, realism, and a deep love of literature and history. . . . In Why Be Happy, [Winterson's] emotional life is laid bare. [Her] struggle to first accept and then love herself yields a bravely frank narrative of truly coming undone. For someone in love with disguises, Winterson's openness is all the more moving; there's nothing left to hide, and nothing left to hide behind."—A.M. Homes, Elle"To read Jeanette Winterson is to love her. . . . The fierce, curious, brilliant British writer is winningly candid in Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? . . . [Winterson has] such a joy for life and love and language that she quickly becomes her very own one-woman band—one that, luckily for us, keeps playing on."—O, the Oprah Magazine"Magnificent . . . What begins as a tragicomic tale of triumph over a soul-destroying childhood becomes something rougher and richer in the later passages. . . . Winterson writes with heartrending precision. . . . Ferociously funny and unfathomably generous, Winterson's exorcism-in-writing is an unforgettable quest for belonging, a tour de force of literature and love."—Vogue"A memoir as unconventional and winning as [Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit], the rollicking bildungsroman . . . that instantly established [Winterson’s] distinctive voice. . . . It’s a testament to Winterson’s innate generosity, as well as her talent, that she can showcase the outsize humor her mother’s equally capacious craziness provides even as she reveals cruelties Mrs. Winterson imposed on her. . . . To confront Mrs. Winterson head on, in life, in nonfiction, demands courage; to survive requires imagination. . . . But put your money on Jeanette Winterson. Seventeen books ago, she proved she had what she needed. Heroines are defined not by their wounds, but by their triumphs.”—New York Times Book Review"Jeanette Winterson's sentences become lodged in the brain for years, like song lyrics. . . . Beautiful . . . Powerful . . . Shockingly revealing . . . Raw and undigested . . . Never has anyone so outsized and exceptional struggled through such remembered pain to discover how intensely ordinary she was meant to be."—Slate"Bold . . . One of the most entertaining and moving memoirs in recent memory . . . A coming-of-age story, a coming-out story, and a celebration of the act of reading . . . A marvelous gift of consolation and wisdom."—The Boston Globe"Unflinching . . . That Winterson should have survived such a terrible early immersion in darkness at all is a kind of miracle. That she should have emerged, if not unscathed then still a functioning human being and a creative artist, is an even greater accomplishment."—San Francisco Chronicle“With raw honesty and wit, Winterson reveals how she fought her way to adulthood, finding success, love—and ultimately forgiveness.”—People (4 stars)"There’s always been something Byronic about Winterson—a stormily passionate soul bitterly indicting the society that excludes her while feeding on the Romantic drama of that exclusion. . . . Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? restores Winterson to her full power. . . . This is a book that will inspire much underlining."—Salon"[Winterson's] novels—mongrels of autobiography, myth, fantasy, and formal experimentation—evince a colossal stamina for self-scrutiny. . . . [A] proud and vivid portrait of working-class life . . . This bullet of a book is charged with risk, dark mirth, hard-won self-knowledge. . . . You're in the hands of a master builder who has remixed the memoir into a work of terror and beauty."— Bookforum "Riveting . . . Beautifully open . . . Why Be Happy is a meditation on loss, stories, and silences."—Newsday"Riveting . . . There's a lot of flinty humor here, a lot of insight into the emotional legacy of adoption—and a generally refreshing admission that understanding life is as hard as living it."—Entertainment Weekly (A-)"Arresting and suspenseful . . . Offers literary surprises and flashes of magnificent generosity and humor."—The Washington Post Book World"[Why Be Happy] very possibly [contains] the most honest writing Winterson has ever done: bone-hard, bone-naked truth that hides nothing about the discovery process of finding her biological mother, and going mad. . . . Her observations read as verses of the King James Bible: bold, beautiful, and true."—Los Angeles Review of Books"Captivating . . . A painful and poignant story of redemption, sexuality, identity, love, loss, and, ultimately, forgiveness."—Huffington Post"Raw . . . A highly unusual, scrupulously honest, and endearing memoir."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Clarion, courageous, and vividly expressive, Winterson conducts a dramatic and revelatory inquiry into the forging of the self and liberating power of literature."— Booklist (starred)"[Winterson] is piercingly honest, deeply creative, and stubbornly self-confident. . . . A testimony to the power of love and the need to feel wanted."—The Seattle Times"Winterson pulls back the veil on her life as she really lived it and shows us that truth is not only stranger than fiction, but more painful and more beautiful as well. . . . Searing and candid . . . Winterson holds nothing back. . . . Written with poetic beauty."— Bookpage"Shattering, brilliant . . . There is a sense at the end of this brave, funny, heartbreaking book that Winterson has somehow reconciled herself to the past. Without her adoptive mother, she wonders what she would be—Normal? Uneducated? Heterosexual?—and she doesn't much fancy the prospect. . . . She might have been happy and normal, but she wouldn't have been Jeanette Winterson. Her childhood was ghastly, as bad as Dickens's stint in the blacking factory, but it was also the crucible for her incendiary talent."—The Sunday Times (UK)"Unconventional, ambitious . . . The experience of reading Why Be Happy is unusually visceral. Winterson confronts her actions, personality quirks, even sexuality, with a kind of violence, as if forcing herself to be honest. . . . The prose is often breathtaking: witty, biblical, chatty, and vigorous all at once."—Financial Times "An extraordinary tragic-comic literary autobiography."— The Guardian (Best Book of 2011)"Searing . . . Winterson's truth is just as compelling as any fiction."—Entertainment Weekly (The Must List)"Moving, honest . . . Rich in detail and the history of the northern English town of Accrington, Winterson's narrative allows readers to ponder, along with the author, the importance of feeling wanted and loved."—Kirkus Reviews"Compelling, in fact, perhaps even more so when compared to the fictionalized version written by Winterson as a twenty-five-year-old. Then, passion and anger seemed to burn off the page. . . . Now comes [an] emotional excavation as a fifty-two-year-old looking back with a cooler, more forgiving eye. . . . The specifics of [Winterson's] early abuse are vivid, violent, and no less horrifying for their familiarity. . . . If the memoir was begun as a final exorcism of the monster mother, it ends with a moving acceptance of her."—The Independent (UK)"Stunningly lovely and fearlessly reflective, Why Be Happy is a reminder of what the project of remembering and recording can—and should—be."—Bookreporter"Exquisite . . . About survival and triumph but also about deep wounds."—LAMDA Literary Review"Winterson's memoir is a brave and searingly honest account of how she reclaimed her childhood through the power of language. . . . Rich in autobiographical detail, it is as wide and bold an experiment in the memoir form as any so far written. Indeed, one of the most daring—and riskiest—experiments this book pulls off is a sudden fast-forward from the world of the lonely, adopted child that we think we know from Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, to the recent present where, in writing that is astonishingly naked and brave, Winterson reveals the legacy of that difficult childhood. . . . Why Be Happy is proudly, and sometimes painfully honest. It is also, arguably, the finest and most hopeful memoir to emerge in many years, and, as such, it really should not be missed."— The Times (UK)"As compulsively readable as Truth and Beauty, Ann Patchett's great memoir of friendship. . . . A tribute to the salvation of narrative."—Shelf Awareness"At last—and essential new book by Jeanette Winterson. She is a natural memoirist. . . . Wry, urgent . . . Pressed on by the need for self-discovery, the prose doesn't miss a beat. . . . Winterson is frank about her own oddness, her fierceness. . . . If the first half of the book has been polished by retelling, the second half is raw, immediate. . . . Gone is the Nabokovian memoir in which the exquisite past is presented under glass, skewered by a pin. This is the age of instant communication, of forthright, unmediated responses. Winterson has her finger to the wind."—Evening Standard (UK)“Provides a vivid picture of the grotesque behaviors of the lunatic mother she refers to as ‘Mrs. Winterson.’ This is a detailed portrait of a life that saved itself. The hard work Winterson did to find her place in the world after growing up as an outsider’s outsider is not exaggerated. We are lucky she survived to tell the tale.”—Library Journal (starred review)"As beautifully crafted as any of Winterson's fiction."—Foreword"Winterson makes the pages sing. . . . A moving, artfully constructed piece of writing that sustains tension until the last sentence."—The Globe and Mail (Favorite Book of the Year)“Idiosyncratic . . . [Winterson] is intense on the page . . . [with] more charisma than a Pentecostal preacher. . . . A sad story, a funny story, a brave story.”—The Scotsman"This is no narrative of victimhood, but one of gratitude. In its lugubrious humor, its striving to find virtue in unlikely places and in its willingness to try to understand the forces that damaged her mother, Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? recalls a feminine version of Edmund Gosse's Father and Son. . . . Winterson lends all [her] fierce poetry, intelligence, and epigrammatic punch to [the] prose. . . Thrilling as the author may be in the denunciation of her mother, the tale as a whole foregrounds the woman's vulnerability; empathy keeps breaking through."—The Australian"We are shown 'how it is when the mind works with its own brokenness,' and come to respect Winterson's psychological courage and her rage to love."— Sunday Telegraph"This difficult, spirited, engaging book, with its touching openness and maddening lack of candor, is a resonant affirmation of the power of storytelling to make things better."—The Daily Mail

"Books, for me, are a home. Books don't make a home-they are one, in the sense that just as you do with a door, you open a book, and you go inside. Inside there is a different kind of time and a different kind of space. There is warmth there too - a hearth. I sit down with a book and I am warm. I know that from the chilly nights on the doorstep." pg. 61Jeanette Winterson grew up in an unhappy, abusive, and religious Pentecostal family. She was adopted at a young age and her mother planned to mold her into a missionary of God. Yet Jeanette heard time and time again that her parents were led to the wrong crib. Jeanette grew up with the knowledge that she never really belonged. She didn't belong to her adoptive parents, she didn't belong to her birth parents, she didn't belong to her public school because she was so religious and she didn't belong to her church because she was a lesbian. She spent many nights outside, alone on her doorstep. She was kicked out of her home at the age of 16 and was homeless living in her car. Growing up, books were forbidden in her house and so the library became a haven and she began to read every author from A to Z in English Literature. She applied to Oxford and to her surprise got in as the "working class" experiment. Jeanette then writes her first book, Oranges are Not the Only Fruit, when she was 24. Some words of advice: Read Oranges are Not the Only Fruit before you read this book. It will make a big difference.I once heard that if you don't deal with the trauma of your past, that the trauma will find you and make you deal with it. Well that is what happened to Jeanette. She sunk into a type of madness, became depressed and emerged forever changed. When Jeanette decides to go on with her life she then makes the decision to find her birth mother. Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal is an amazing memoir. It is not told in a linear fashion but it is full of life and passion. Complex, yet simply told, Winterson bares her soul, telling her readers that she never learned how to love nor how to be loved. Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal is an explanation of her book, Oranges and a confession of a very painful past. She divulges her tumultuous past with style, wit and grace all the while showing her readers, wisdom and the strength to endure. I was so inspired and riveted to Jeanette's story and have many passages of wisdom marked in my book. This memoir is deeply personal to Winterson and to me, as the reader. I felt I was looking into the window of her soul."Nobody can feel too much, though many of us work very hard at feeling too little.Feeling is frightening.Well, I find it so."Pg. 187

Ever run across a book and an author that just bends your mind? This is how I felt as soon as I started the audio unabridged version of this book, and so had to buy the paperback as well. It is read by the author and what a reading it is. I cannot remember when I have delighted in a book as much as I have this one and especially the vocal done by the author herself. It's a hard story. Much of the early part is a little hard to take, but sometimes it seems that people go through tough things and come out stronger on the other end. This seems to be the case with the woman who took charge of her education at Cambridge, and then became the author of many books, one of which became a TV presentation.Having never heard of Jeanette Winterson made it all the more interesting. There is such talent out in the world that we've never heard of and when we find them, when they touch us with that special touch, we are instantly changed for the better. Since I am a huge audible.com fan and am constantly downloading books there, this book was a recommendation by them and I'm so glad they did.I delighted in virtually every word, every inflection, and how love prevails, even when it doesn't seem like love. It all depends on our perspective.I cannot recommend this book enough and especially the unabridged audiobook. Bravo!

Jeanette Winterson's way of describing the almost indescribable brought tears to my eyes more than once. All my life, I've searched for these words to describe being an orphan and, after that, being abandoned. The life of forever seeking a lost part of yourself, of not knowing how to love and the crippling, incapacitating fear of loss. The poetry of her language is breathtaking and I finished reading with a sigh...Jeanette Winterson understands and speaks for all the lost ones.

Even if, like me, you are not a fan of Jeanette Winterson, you might want to give this book a read. It's not your typical memoir, but then, Jeanette Winterson's story is not your typical biography either. She was adopted at six weeks of age as an only child living with a fanatically religious mother. Cruelty and sometimes isolation ensued (being tossed into the "coal hole" or left out on the doorstep overnight), certainly not the fare the average British child grows up having endure. But endure she does. In the end, the craziness of her upbringing becomes a rather dark gift -- one that Jeanette Winterson, herself, is willing to recognize when later she meets her biological mother and finds she cannot bear to hear the criticism heaped by her bio-mother on her monstrous adopted mother. I found this memoir more than touching -- for me it was a fascinating glimpse into working class England circa 1960s, it was a poignant and sometimes searing glance into the human soul -- this book vacillates between humor and horror, between pleaure and pain. In the end, we are left with a curiously optimistic view -- out of all of this adversity sprung a fully formed, successful author -- one whose underlying quality is that of absolute tensile strength. One is left to wonder, without that struggle to survive, what does a writer really have to write?(This review was not one of those Amazon reviews you've been reading about -- it was not paid for nor solicited -- I bought this book in a bookstore because I thought it looked interesting and I read it cover to cover.)

This is an excellent beginners guide to drawing in pen & ink. It will take the beginner into all the things they need to learn. But many books do this - why choose this one? Well, as a person who buys art books obsessively, let me tell you.A. Dunn does not cover the paper with walls of text. He covers the paper with a plethora of examples with a small amount simple easy to follow text.B. Dunn has truly considered all the points. A great many books seem to skip things because the subject is too detailed or maybe they think it will be learned by the more mature artist. Dunn doesn't condescend. He tells you. Or more accurately, he shows. There is a significant amount of the book spent on the importance of texture and how to use it, for example. Many books will show you how to do shadow with cross hatching. Dunn takes that a step further and shows you how to develop a shadow using the texture you are trying to illustrate. Hair, animal skin, etc.C. Dunn takes the learner into the importance of different ways of drawing. Of gesture and detailed drawing and landscape and even doodle.I think what is important about this book is that Dunn is very aware of how he learned and what his questions were and he tried very hard to make a book that would have helped him. And that makes all the difference.

I have been following Alphonso for the past few months and his drawing instruction is superb. I have never related to any other instructor or teaching medium as well as I do to his methodologies. He teaches you how to see complex forms as they really are, simple forms made complex. He really has a passion for drawing and that love shows through in everything he does. He has spent most of his time teaching people for free and he put all of his knowledge into this wonderful book. This is a must own for any aspiring arist or even advanced artists who want to increase their competence in pen and ink.

I originally purchase this book to support the artist. His youtube channel is awesome. He freely gives his time to teach art. That being said, this book is fantastic. Inspirational, informative and a pleasure to read. I heard he put together the book by himself. The book helped me get back into inking and I enjoyed it more than painting digitally. Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in pen and ink. Here are some of my sketches.

I came to pen and ink drawing pretty late in life. I have found it incredibly rewarding and impossibly frustrating to learn, but get so much out of the process of observation that I have stuck with it. In that spirit I have been following Alphonso Dunn's video's on youtube for the last year and a half or so. He always presents fundamental information in an intelligent, insightful, and entertaining fashion but ultimately instills in the viewer the idea that with a little bit of practice you can improve. I have watched and rewatched these videos so many times that I made a personal vow to buy his book as soon as it became available in order to take a small step towards repaying him for all of the hours he commits to his fans. What I received was a pen and ink primer that is as beautifully written as the illustrations found within. It is perfect for a beginner and a valuable resource for pen and ink artists of all skill levels. Well Dunn!

I have been watching Alphonso Dunn on YouTube for over three years and everything I love about his teaching there is found in his book. I have taken MANY art courses and most I paid for, but Mr Dunn's teachings go above and beyond any of the teaching I received else where. What is unique about his teaching is what also can be found in someone who displays good parenting skills. He doesn't just say, "Do this." He says's this is what I do, and I do it because....". He tells you what his thinking process is and that is what is so lacking in most teaching. So often I would watch wonderful artists on line and I was always thinking, " I wonder what is going on in their heads as they make these marks." This peek into the thought process has helped me immensely. So not only so I recommend this book, I highly recommend his YouTube channel. He has a kind, humble spirit which also lends to his ability to "draw in" ( pun intended) a wide audience.

You know what, guys? This book is awesome. And I'ma tell you why. It's really safe to say that here in this book all the information is greatly structured. You can find all the nuts and bolts which are just vital for anyone who's anything serious about drawing itself.Just think of the following: if you don't know 'the letters' than how you're gonna write? Here the picture is pretty much the same. It's the alphabet for an artist. And it's more than just helping you to draw what you see. Here you can find the way how you have to think of in order to draw literally everything. What you should think about when drawing. What you should bear in mind. It's something that you wouldn't find.Well the book's called 'a simple guide'. Well it is simple and tremendously useful! A real guide! The author is very generous. This book can give you a very great start if you are the beginner, and very great tips for further studying as well! It's worth it. It's valuable. In fact, priceless.Thank you, Alphonso Dunn. Obliged.PS: From Russia with love.

While creating wedding signs from videos on a Youtube I came across a man Named Alphonso Dunn. I am not sure what it was about his voice but he had this tone that was so encouraging. He made everything seem so simple. I felt like "hmmm...Maybe I can do that!" I started with spheres then trees and now I post regularly on my Instagram and people are asking me for prints. I bought his book because it compiles everything I learned from his Youtube channel and placed it in a neat and cometw package. Unfortunately I don't get to hear his encouraging voice as I go through the learning process but Im so happy to have this book in my tool kit. You can see the first thing I drew after I got this book in the pictures. Line of balance baby! I can't wait to get started on the next one. Thank you for sending down a path I never consider Alphonso Dunn. I owe you my sanity.

Review

"Yasmin Khan has lived and traveled widely in Iran, and The Saffron Tales . . . reflects traditions she knows intimately. But she has the rare gift of being able to translate her personal heritage into recipes even newcomers will be able to pull off." - The New York Times Book Review"Yasmin Khan traversed Iran in search of the country's most delicious recipes, adding her own modern twist to each dish." - The Independent"One of the more engrossing cookbooks I read this year . . . Nations speak and, in some cases, survive through their culinary traditions. This book is an incomparable and important examination of Iranian society through its kitchens and cuisine." - Jessica Koslow, The Wall Street Journal"Of all the books I read for this roundup, [The Saffron Tales] had the most recipes I wanted to try. The combination of simple and unusual gets me every time. An omelette with dates and cinnamon was a delight. Olives marinated with walnuts and pomegranates were cocktail-hour crack." - The Wall Street Journal"[Khan’s] food is a sensitive balance of tradition with modern tweaks." - Los Angeles Times"Yasmin celebrates the rich history of Persian food with accessible recipes and enticing photographs. Fan of Ottolenghi? You’ll love this!" - Good Housekeeping"A truly impressive culinary compendium showcasing and celebrating the cuisine of Iran . . . enjoyable . . . inspiring . . . The Saffron Tales is strongly recommended and certain to be an enduringly popular addition to personal, professional, family, and community library cookbook collections." - Midwest Book Review"This is so much more than a compilation of recipes, gorgeous though they themselves are. This is a book that tells a story, both cultural and personal, and her voice is as engaging as her food." - Nigella Lawson"Yasmin’s recipes are a mouthwatering showcase of a beautiful country." - Yotam Ottolenghi"Not just a great cookbook but a book full of stories--a love letter to Iran and its people." - Diana Henry"Yasmin Khan draws on her vast experience as a storyteller, cook, human rights activist, itinerant traveler and writer to create a moving, empathetic, hugely knowledgeable and utterly delicious book." - Anthony Bourdain on ZAITOUN

I have had this book for only a couple of weeks and have already made so many dishes. This is my new favorite Cookbook. I had a small dinner party for vegetarians (and one vegan) and made the Persian rice salad and Burnt Eggplant dip. Both delicious. Can't wait to make the Persian Love Cake and the Date Bars. Love the flavors and recipes are easy to follow and made me feel confident even when using exotic ingredients like Saffron, Golpar, Rose Water. I am going to give this cookbook as a gift to friends for Christmas.

I am entranced with this cookbook, and have already made at least sixteen of the recipes. I took the time to find (or order from Amazon) some of the less common ingredients, such as dried limes and barberries. Everything his come out wonderfully. I had a small dinner party one night and just winged it using Khan's menu suggestions, and everything came out great even though I'd never made any of it before. Iranian food, particularly the liberal and extensive use of fresh herbs, is so elegant and flavorful, it's become my new favorite cuisine.

A wonderful book, love to read of Yasmin's travels and the people she met along the way. I got over my fear of working with yeast and made Naan bread, I surprised even myself at how well it turned out, mine look a little golden, as I dabbed with butter when they were done. The almond/date tahini balls are a dream and so good for you.....I would very much recommend this book.

Beautiful cookbook and interesting glimpse into the Iranian culture. The onion and fenugreek soup has already become a regular meal at my home, and I have tried many more of the recipes with success. I look forward to trying more of the recipes. Definitely would recommend.

Love the stories, pictures, and of course recipes! We have tried numerous recipes and they always turn out great. I can't wait to use this more! My first Persian cookbook purchase and I am happy!

I love reading all the stories and can't wait to try out all the delicious recipes offered in this beautiful book. Yasmin Khan has travelled throughout Iran in search of regional and family recipes, collecting a sample of every region in this well written book. I love this cookbook so much that I haven't put it on shelf next to my other cookbook collection yet, reading recipes and the stories that go with them every day.

I read about the story behind the cookbook and was interested in that as much as the recipes themselves - the family history, and the stories of where the recipes come from, as well as the country itself. All of that is really fun to read about, and is nicely weaved into the recipes. But it's not just the stories. The food is so, so good. I'm not a good cook, and I've never cooked Persian food at home, but there's so much in this book that is simple to do (while looking v v impressive to the dinner guests.) The red cabbage and date salad is better than any coleslaw I've ever bought, Chicken with walnuts is the easiest complicated thing I've ever tried, and the easy naan is even easier than the name suggests. Also, super important in our house given we're 50% vegetarian, not only are there lots of veggie dishes, but the meat recipes often have a postscript outlining a vegetarian alternative. This is a great cookbook, especially if you're interested in what food means for a country and the people who live there.

This a great cookbook on Persian cooking that has straight forward recipes and a story behind them of their origins. The ingredients are simply explained and the book would make a lovely introduction to the food culture for an adventurous cook and a really nice shower gift for someone starting out!

This was supposed to be the original 1818 version of the book, but it isn’t. It’s a bizarre copy - there are no publishing notes at all. It’s missing the Preface. I compared the first few chapters to an online version of the 1818 book and I noticed differences in Letter 3 where a whole paragraph was added. I would need to check the 1831 version to see if that is what this book is. I should return it but it was $4 and not worth the effort.

This book was one of the biggest surprises for me! Absolutely NOTHING what I expected. When someone says word "Frankenstein", you think about a lab, a mad proffesor, some lightning buzzing into the bolts inside monster's head. Drop all this imagination! This classical book had nothing of it! :O Maybe that's why I was so amazed. If I didn't have all those expectations, maybe my rating would be lower, but now, damn, I liked it a lot! Since I have so much to say, I'll just drop it into a list, of good and bad things :)1) It's awesome that Amazon is giving free ebooks for classical literature like this! Thanks, Amazon! And what a surprise it was for me, that this Kindle edition is the real original "Frankenstein", but audiobook narrated by George Guidhall is of a later edition (which was edited by the author herself, when her book became famous). So reading those two books where more like reading two separate books for me - one ebook and one audiobook, with quite a lot of changes, even so major as who Elizabeth was to Victor - a real cousin, or just a girl taken from street! :O2) As I said, I have expected this book to be absolutely different! A horror story, about making a man from different body parts. Actually this only took a few pages of the book. All the book was Victor's thoughts about what he had done, creatures thoughts about humankind, and 3) a lot a lot A LOT of words misery, wretchedness and countenance :D My oh my, I have never read so many same QQing thoughts in my life! :D This book could be a good 5 star if Victor's thoughts weren't so TERRIBLY repetitive. He said he feels misery/is miserable/life's misery at least 135 times (just did a search in my Kindle). I won't even count other of his cryings. I should be ashamed of making fun of his inner tortures. Victor Frankenstein had a really difficult life, but I'm not if it was a good idea by the author to write it in such a repetitive way! but on the other hand - it was an absolutely different style from the books I usually read, so also a good thing.4) Never ever don't you dear call a man-made-man a "Frankenstein"! He didn't have a name! Frankenstein was his creator. But the creature was just that - a creature. And what a surprise he was! All my life I thought of Frankenstein's creature to be a mindless monster, with bolts in his head, making ugly sounds and walking like a zombie. That's what those movies show! But this was such a mistake of mine! :O Creature was one of the most intelligent characters in the story! His ability to deduct, to learn, to feel... he was amazing! The story creature told about his first year of life was so heartgripping that I felt so fond of him, so sorry for him... Sadly later he changed.. Loniness makes people (and other creatures) do bad things... :( But still.. he was not a mindless zombie. He was extremely sensitive being.. With emotions on extremities - both good and bad. But wouldn't we be like that, if we didn't have parents and comfort of other people to learn from?I highly recommend this book to everyone who wants to read some intricate English language, but who has enough patience to suffer though all characters' repetitive sufferings (pun intended). This book is emotional, but not in a romantic way. It makes You think about creators responsibility against the creation. And most of all, it shows how Your decisions can change Your whole life!

If you're reading this review, you only have one question. You're not looking for a book review, you already know it's a classic. You already know this is the most original, and one of the best, and best-written horror stories in literature. You may or may not like the story, but that's a matter of personal taste. A lot of people don't like Shakespeare, but no one questions whether he was a good writer or not. If you don't like the writing style, it's because you aren't familiar with the English of this period. Nearly eighty years before Stoker's "Dracula" ( an idea stolen from Polidori's "The Vampyre", which was an idea stolen from LeFanu's "Carmilla"), this most-original horror masterpiece was born. So, your only question is, "Is this really the uncensored 1818 version? Because I've only seen one other verified version, and it's over twenty dollars in paperback. All the others claiming to be the 1818 version have been disproved." YES, as far as I can tell, it is. The only preface is Shelley's own original. There is no introduction, no commentary or editorial credits whatsoever. There are no illustrations, and the spelling and language have not been edited. Have a good thesaurus handy. So, here it is, the author's original script, no frills, for a bargain price. Which is exactly what I was looking for.

Do not buy this (October 22, 2017) Kindle edition of Frankenstein. The book is riddled with typographic errors and the wording is off in many places. Some sentences don't flow or even make sense. It appears a bad OCR tool was used to translate the original Frankenstein novel to this bastardization. I had to put down the book since it was simply unreadable. As an alternative, I downloaded the open source version (legally free) from Gutenberg here: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/84. I'm now reading and enjoying Frankenstein on its 200th anniversary.

A young governess is hired to care for a young girl named Flora and her brother, Miles. Miles has been expelled from a prestigious school and never explains why he has been sent home. Over time, the governess who is the narrator along with the housekeeper, Mrs. Grose believe that the children are in contact and being controlled by the evil Peter Quint, a former resident and Miss Jessel, their former governess. The children have a sweet demeanor but at times their cunning ways are apparent. Will they be successful in extricating the children from these dark forces? Read Henry James’ popular The Turn of the Screw and see how things pan out!

Wars of the Anunnaki: Nuclear Self-Destruction in Ancient SumerBy Chris H. Hardy Ph.D.

Examines the Anunnaki gods’ evolving relationships with humanity, their power struggles, and the details of their nuclear war on Earth

• Analyzes the crisis and rationale behind the Anunnaki decision to nuke 5 cities in the Jordan plain, resulting in the obliteration of Sumerian civilization

• Draws upon the work of Zecharia Sitchin, the Book of Genesis, Sumerian clay tablets, and archaeological evidence such as ancient radioactive skeletons

• Examines the Anunnakis’ lack of higher consciousness, their reliance on technology, their sacred power objects and sacred geometry, and the possibility of Anunnaki bases on Mars in the distant past

The detonation of nuclear weapons in the 20th century was not the first time humanity has seen such terrible destruction. Drawing upon the work of Zecharia Sitchin, the Book of Genesis, Sumerian clay tablets, and archaeological evidence such as ancient radioactive skeletons, Chris Hardy reveals the ancient nuclear event that destroyed the Sumerian civilization and the power struggles of the “gods” that led up to it.

The author explains how the Anunnaki came to Earth from the planet Nibiru seeking gold to repair their ozone layer. Using genetic engineering, they created modern humanity to do their mining work and installed themselves as our kings and our gods. Anunnaki god Enki had a fatherly relationship with the first two humans. Then Enlil, Enki’s brother, took over as Commander of Earth, instating a sole-god theocracy and a war against the clan of Enki and humanity for spoiling the Anunnaki bloodlines through interbreeding. This shift imposed a blackout not only of the very human nature of the Anunnaki “gods” but also of humanity’s own ancient past on Earth.

Two of Enlil’s attacks against the Enki clan and humanity are described in the stories of the Deluge and the Tower of Babel. His final attempt, after coercing the Assembly of the Gods into voting yes, was the nuclear bombing of 5 cities of the Jordan plain, including Sodom and Gomorrah, which resulted in the destruction of the Sumerian civilization and the Anunnakis’ own civilization on Earth, including their space port in the Sinai. The author reveals how, after each attempt, humanity was saved by Enki, chief scientist Ninmah, and Enki’s son Hermes.

The author explores how the Anunnakis’ reliance on technology and their recurrent wars caused them to lose touch with cosmic consciousness. And she reveals how we will be doomed to repeat this dynamic until humanity awakens to our true origins.

Review
“. . . a riveting new view of human history. This book adds significantly to our knowledge of the ancient astronauts.” (Jim Marrs, New York Times bestselling author)

“Hardy makes a strong case for the use of nuclear weapons many thousands of years ago.” (David Hatcher Childress, author of Technology of the Gods)

“Such an important work!” (Linda Moulton Howe, Emmy Award–winning investigative journalist)

“Chris Hardy, Ph.D., releases yet another scholarly probe--with expertly written evidence and keen observations of our ancient past that will not remain hidden or forgotten. Her extensive research and understanding piece together a history of rivalries, avant-garde knowledge of weapons, advanced technologies, and warring gods that can only be understood today, in our modern times, as we have entered the nuclear age. Great truths are revealed in this unraveling of history. Superb book!” (Chase Kloetzke, author, ufologist, FATE Magazine Radio host)

“Chris Hardy’s new book gives us an interesting account of the destructive wars of ancient times. She makes a strong case for the use of nuclear weapons many thousands of years ago--in a devastating war that ranged across several planets in our solar system.” (David Hatcher Childress, author of Technology of the Gods and publisher of Adventures Unlimited Pres)

“The Anunnaki wars described by Chris H. Hardy, Ph.D., are revealed to be territorial, egomaniacal family feuds where even nukes are used! So, if these warring Sumerian gods were extraterrestrials from a rogue Nibiru planet a million years ago--who needed gold to restore their planet’s deteriorating atmosphere and genetically boosted Homo erectus as well as other later standing-up primates to be a labor force--then this book also shows why humans have long fought irrational wars over whose ‘god’ is superior. Such an important work!” (Linda Moulton Howe, Emmy Award-winning investigative journalist and reporter and editor of Earthfile)

“The unraveling of some dark events in our past through the detailed accounts of the Sumerian tablets can make one’s hair rise when we discover the true and dire reasons for the smashing of the Babel Tower and especially the erasing of Sodom and Gomorrah by weapons of mass destruction. Chris Hardy shows that the tablets reveal a total absence of sexual sin and, to the contrary, a lethal infighting for power within a royal family of men and women who became our gods.” (Marilyn Schlitz, Ph.D., author, laboratory and clinical scientist, social anthropologist, and presid)

“From her thorough research in Sumerian texts as well as biblical literature and archaeological sites, Hardy has concluded that ‘weapons of mass destruction’ are not new. Readers might disagree, but they will not be bored with this richly documented and provocative book.” (Stanley Krippner, Ph.D., author and professor of psychology at Saybrook University)

“This groundbreaking book by Chris Hardy presents convincing evidence from ancient history and modern science that a cataclysmic nuclear event destroyed ancient Sumerian culture. This important and thought-provoking book challenges our assumptions about the past and raises disturbing questions about mankind’s future.” (Richard Dewhurst, author of The Ancient Giants Who Ruled America)

“This book should be of interest to all those who are, like me, interested in evidence for ancient warfare involving the use of weapons resembling modern nuclear weapons.” (Michael A. Cremo, author of Forbidden Archeology)

Chapter 5

The Use of Nukes

The Sumerian Account

THE IMMENSELY COSTLY and permanent wars between the gods, such as the two Pyramid Wars recorded in the tablets, found their culmination in the second half of the twenty-first century BCE. The nastiest such war brought about the whole destruction of Sumer and Palestine, and it was recorded in Sumerian tablets, mainly as an immense number of “Laments” from any city in Sumer who had been destroyed. In the Book as well, it was recorded as the War of the Kings, in which Abraham took an active part, followed up in 2024 BCE, by what is called “the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.”

Let’s see the prologue to this war.

We learn that Terah, the father of Abraham, was a High Priest of Enlil in Nippur, the most sacred city and first capital of Sumer, created by and dedicated to Enlil. Indeed, Abraham’s first Sumerian name, Abram, meant “dweller of Nibru.Ki” (Nippur, in Sumerian).

Then Terah went to live in Ur, the new capital, the city of Nannar, heir of Enlil, when this god was given the spiritual and administrative tutorship of the two cities, corresponding with the crowning of King Ur-Nammu. In 2096 BCE, King Ur-Nammu, battling in the East on a mission for the gods, died by accident, he who had been the protégé of several gods, especially Enlil and his firstborn Nannar. The population felt that the great gods had left their protégé to die, they had abandoned him--they who were almighty didn’t care to interfere and save their chosen King, one who was only doing their will. An immense deception and questioning emerged in the minds of Sumerians, about the very Chief of the gods, Enlil, clearly expressed in the tablets.

This very year, Terah moved with his family--notably the young couple Abram (Abraham), 27 years old, and his wife and half-sister Sarai (Sarah)--to Harran, a town on the Euphrates River, in Hittites Land, northwest of Sumer . . . as if in preparation for the dire catastrophe that was to erase Sumer. When Abraham was 75, he was instructed by the Deity to leave Harran and go south, and he left with his wife and his nephew Lot, whose father had died. It is at this occasion that we can surmise that Abraham--raised to be the next High Priest of Enlil--being childless, chose Lot to be his adopted son, through whom the priestly line would pass. The move happened 24 years before the use of nukes that destroyed five towns in the Sinai plain and then the whole of Sumer through the ensuing radioactive cloud--but Abraham’s line of High Priests of Enlil was spared.

It was an Assembly of the Gods that approved the use of nukes to destroy Marduk and his son Nabu. The most violent support and incentive for the use of nukes came from Nergal backed by Enlil. It is noteworthy that, as Mesopotamia (Sumer and Akkad) was destroyed in near totality, all the Anunnaki who had their cities and abodes there (mainly the Enlil’s clan) lost their populations, properties, cattle, and crops. The land was thoroughly scorched by the contaminated wind. The only exception, the only city that escaped destruction, was the abode of Marduk, Babylon.

So, how do these gods react to their abodes and civilization being destroyed by a seemingly ill-fated wind blowing northeastward, and thus bringing back unto their own lands the lethal nuclear energy they had unleashed elsewhere? How do they react to the loss of everything--their civilization and followers--while the very city of their  arch-enemy--Babylon--was the only one to be spared? They now interpret by mutual consent that the (mysterious) “Creator-of-All” has singled out Marduk as his protégé and that, in accordance, they have not only to leave him alone but also grant him (at last) the right to possess a land of his own and to be worshipped in a temple. They also grant him the “Enlilship,” the status of the Chief of the Gods on Earth. And thus began the era of Marduk and the end of Enlil’s sovereignty.

Mesopotamia, Lebanon, and the Sinai regions were irradiated and unfit for life for a very long time to come. The consequence (that to my knowledge is not stated in the tablets we have unearthed) is that first Enlil, and then all the gods of Enlil’s clan, had to find a new land as well as new earthling people as their followers, priests, and servants. And it couldn’t be in Egypt nor in Africa at large--the domain of Enki’s clan since olden times.

During his long exile, Marduk and his son had traveled to various countries and he had already presented himself (as had been his longstanding aim) as “the” foremost god, and by the time of the use of nukes, he had gathered followers and temples everywhere. We can infer that these regions were the ones where we find him venerated as the prominent deity under various names--such as the region that was going to become Persia with Cyrus, and where he is called Ahura-Mazda (or Ormuzd), and of course the domain of his father, Egypt, where he reigned as Ra after the 9,000 years of his father Ptah/Enki’s reign, thus starting the second reign of the 1st dynasty of gods in Egypt (as stated by Manetho in his Kings’ List).

In The Lost Book of Enki, Zecharia Sitchin describes that Enlil was warned by a dream of a catastrophe to befall Sumer, and that this is how he ordered Terah to take his family out of Nippur, and then Ur, to settle in Harran; and why, still later, he commanded Abraham to move southward to Canaan and the Negev desert--where the latter took an active and heroic part in the “War of the Kings” that led to the fateful use of the nukes--the last act.
